Standard solutions for decommissioning nuclear facilities
Based on the world's first fast-neutron nuclear reactor
RU BN-350, Kazakhstan

BN-350 reactor plant, Kazakhstan

The company's flagship project.
Since 2002, METR has been the General Designer for the decommissioning of the world's first fast-neutron nuclear reactor, the BN-350 reactor facility in Aktau, Kazakhstan.

Unique technical and technological solutions were developed based on the BN-350 reactor facility, which are recognized as universal for all reactor types worldwide, regardless of the chosen dismantling concept: deferred or immediate.
About the RU BN-350 project

The Russian state-owned corporation ROSATOM evaluated the technical and technological solutions developed by METR for the decommissioning of the BN-350 reactor unit and confirmed their applicability for any type of nuclear power plant worldwide, under any chosen concept: Deferred or Immediate Dismantling ("Brown Lawn" or "Green Lawn").

All technical and technological solutions were developed based on international requirements and recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The technologies offered by METR enable comprehensive solutions to problems related to the handling of radioactive and non-radioactive materials and waste during the decommissioning of fast neutron reactors and all types of nuclear facilities.

Technical and technological solutions can be integrated into the design documentation of already decommissioned nuclear facilities, either comprehensively or individually, depending on the facility's decommissioning stage.

For new nuclear power plant construction, decommissioning plans and budgets can be incorporated into the facility's total cost during the design phase.

METR offers standard integrated solutions for renewable energy sources (RES) based on licensing in the following areas:

  • Nuclear Fuel Detection and Extraction Technology
  • Technologies for handling sodium and its residues
  • Extraction and processing of all types of radioactive waste using robotics from any type of storage facility
  • Technologies for safe long-term storage (50 years or more) of all types of radioactive waste of any activity level
  • Technologies for the development and optimization of decontamination
  • Technology for dismantling (or preserving) contaminated equipment, pipelines, buildings and structures
  • Technology for handling radioactive soil
  • Radioactive Gas Purification Technology
  • Radiation safety
  • Design solutions for establishing the boundaries of the sanitary protection zone and observation zone (SPZ and ZN) during the decommissioning of nuclear facilities
